The Apollo Motion MIDI Controller transforms the iPhone's built-in accelerometer into an innovative musical instrument. By shaking or tapping the device, users can trigger MIDI notes or chords, which can be particularly effective when paired with a variety of synthesizer and drum applications available on iOS.

Utilizing bodily movement as a means to keep rhythm allows for a more intuitive musical experience. The action of tapping feet or clapping hands translates seamlessly into the app, capturing an organic feel that enhances music creation. The app can function akin to traditional percussion instruments such as a shaker, tambourine, or cowbell, with MIDI notes providing essential accents that enrich any composition.

The application detects rapid accelerations across six different axes, enabling the triggering of six distinct MIDI events. For instance, the front axis could serve as a cymbal hit while the back may simulate a bass drum. Additionally, it supports sending program change and control change messages, broadening its functionality. However, it is worth noting that the accelerometer's response rate may not be suitable for rapid speed-metal drum rolls, as this limits the speed at which notes are activated.

The Apollo Motion MIDI Controller is compatible with Apollo MIDI over Bluetooth, recognized as the original Bluetooth MIDI solution for iOS devices. This allows for low-latency wireless MIDI communication to an iPad or Mac, facilitating unrestricted movement during performance without the encumbrance of cables. Furthermore, it is also compatible with musicIO, enabling high-speed MIDI and four channels of audio via a standard USB sync cable when connecting to either a Mac or PC.
